I don’t know if I’m good, although I’ve often felt that I can proceed more quickly than the study group – when I have the drive. But I’ve always enjoyed the interaction in studying a language.
Just as I don’t think I could have written my long chaptered fic without posting it as a WIP and getting feedback. I still hope you’ll complete and publish a short Severus story – perhaps one that’s part of a long story but can stand on its own, too.
Not at all, no need to apologise for saying more about your relationship with Snape. Lupin (in PoA and OotP) – or arrogant as it must sound, the Remus I’ve extrapolated on the basis of those books – is my absolute favourite fictional character. Even though it’s another character, I think the two of us can can relate, as I loved him pretty much from the start when I read the first scene with him in PoA and I connected with him right away.
As for Snape, I remember realising immediately when finishing HBP that Snape only killed Dumbledore because he was dying and because it was part of their plan. That’s when I started seriously regretting that Snape wasn’t “my character” but also feeling that Rowling was doing justice to him, whereas she’d given up a lot of Lupin’s potential.
I, too, like writing and reading the characters as in-character (writing them, particularly Remus, IC based on the first five books), but it’s essential to me that there are countless possibilities for interpreting canon portrayals of characters other than Rowling’s viewpoint-characer and particularly of those who have small roles in canon. And I think I’ve often written against popular fanon characterisations, partly because I started writing as early as in 2003 and before reading any fanfic, and I want to keep all my work internally consistent.
I’ve got the feeling that you and I understand each other even though we’ve got some different preferences, and it’s lovely to talk to you!
