So far nothing I'm working on right now really has much potential to have a sort of standalone part. One story might have the option, but the trouble I have when it comes to the HP fic I write is that they're all very plot heavy and highly detailed.
I did like Lupin in PoA, but as we learned more about him and the Marauders, particularly in OotP, I didn't like him as much. Part of what bothers me is JKR's decision to pair him off with Tonks and that came out of nowhere to readers (at least to me) and doesn't really make sense. Part of that is her writing the books from Harry's POV (except for certain parts of HBP and DH), so the readers' view is very limited as to what is actually going on in the wizarding world on the whole. I think many readers, particularly those who hate Snape, have difficulty extrapolating information and viewing that world from more than just Harry's limited scope. How they latch on to Snape being in love with Lily and not getting over her. That's not how I read it at all. I viewed it as him slipping up and losing his closest friend. I lost a friend in middle school under somewhat similar circumstances (didn't call them a name, but we "dated" (12 years old, so we didn't even so much as hold hands; we just used the "boyfriend/girlfriend" dating label that truly apply) and even now at almost 32 it's something I still greatly regret. I see Snape's actions as great regret and the need for atonement. Not necessarily that he's hung up on her. I also don't really see him as having been in love with her in the sense of desiring her sexually. I tend to code him as either ace or gay most of the time.
Since we've both been reading in the HP fandom for a very long time, we both likely have a different understanding of the books and characters than those who are younger and/or haven't been in the fandom for as long. Same for those who've only watched the movies and never read the books. I've read so much Snarry fic over my many years of involvement that I'm highly selective of what I read and I can tell within the first bit of a story if I'll like it or not. I'll also read fics where Snape adopts Harry or is his biological father (I know that contradicts what I said about not viewing him as desiring Lily sexually) on the Potions and Snitches site. When I read HP fic now I tend to focus on the older fics that I've read loads before. Even recent fics that ignore the last one or two books (or the Horcruxes and Hallows) have a different feel from fics that were written before the last 2 or even 3 books were published. Those fics are more what I gravitated toward.
It's definitely lovely talking with you and it's nice to talk with someone who has similar views about the characters.
